The Ratheram Family Of Warwickshire

BRYANT/HOGG/AND SALT FAMILIES

I am also researching my ancestors with the names of Bryant,Hogg and Salt. My Grandmother's maiden name was Bryant and Hogg and Salt are the family names of my mother Pauline.

The Bryants and the Hoggs originate from Foscott and Wolverton in the north of Buckinghamshire. Interestingly these villages are not that far apart. The Salt family have  roots in Dudley, Worcestershire.

BRYANT CONNECTIONS

I have traced my Bryant family back to 1842 and my G-Grandfather Benjamin Bryant who was born in Foscott, Bucks
1860 Married Barbara Ridgway in Akeley, Bucks
1861 Living in Akeley
1871 The family had moved to West Bromwich

They had 9 children

THOMAS BRYANT

Thomas and Annie had 11 children although not all survived infancy. The family  belonged to the Salvation Army and all played musical insturments.

Thomas was also Bandmaster with the South Staffs Territorial Army Brass Band. This was quite a family affair with his son Thomas joining him along with my grandfather James Ernest and his sons Harold and Herbert.

HOGG CONNECTIONS

These are my ancestors from my mther's side. Hogg being her Father's surname and Salt being her Mother's maiden name.
HOGG

I have traced my ancestors to Wolverton, Buckinhamshire with my G-G-Grandmother Elizabeth Grenville born in Peltham, Durham about 1815.  She marries a Hogg but by 1851 Elizabeth is already a widow so the name of her husband is as yet unknown.
Elizabeth has at least four children before the premature death of her husband.

WILLIAM AND EMMA WATSON (my G-Grandfather)

1884 William is not born in Bucks like his sisters but states his birthplace as Crewe in Cheshire
1851 Living at Bury Strrt, Wolverton
1861 Living at Bury Strret, Wolverton. William is occupation recorded as a Millwright.
1864 Married EMMA WATSON at Potterspury, Bucks
They have nine children. This initially caused some confusion as they appear to have two sons called Frederick.

1871 Living at Akeley Bucks.
1881 Living at Raglan Road.  By coincidence the house number is 98 and my father was born at 97. It is amazing that at this time the Hogg and Ratheram familiy may have know each other two generations before my parents married. They have a son Frederick who is recorded  as 4 (Frederick 1)
1891 Living at Montague Raod, Harborne.
On the this census  Frederick was shown again as 4. Initially I presumed the age was an error as my Grandfather Frederick was born in 1887. I now know that he was named after his brother Frederick (on the 1881 census) who met with a horrific death in 1882 when only 5 years old. His death certificate states it was an 'Accidental death - Shock from burns to abdomen and thighs when shirt caught fire'.

There was an inquest and the report shows a stark picture of the living conditions at the time with very liitle sympathy for the mother.

 FREDERICK (2)

My Grandfather died in 1958 when I was only 2 so unfortunately I do not have any recollections of him as a person.

Born at Montague Road, Smethwick in 1886.

1913  No early history is known about Frederick until he decides to emigrate to Ontario, Canada. in April 1913. He sailed from Bristol on the HMS Royal Edward.   Frederick booked  an assisted passage where he would have worked his way across the atlantic probably as a steward.

1914 Unfortunately his new life in Canada was cut short with the onset of WW1. Frederick returned to England to join the Army where he was placed in the Royal Army Medical Corp.

From his war Diaries we know that he was a Stretcher Brearer and Ambulance Driver. This must have been a harrowing job particularly as he was at Ypes and the Somme.
1915 Frederick marries Florence Edith Salt
1919 Returns from the war and sets up his own business at a Boot and Shoe Repairer from his home.
1919 Birth of daughter Joan
1924 Birth of daughter Pauline (my mother)
1956 Moved to live with daughter Pauline and family at Hagley Road West, Quinton
